AERATING This is the process of allowing air to the root structure of the grass. Horse paddocks quickly become compacted near the surface forming an impenetrable barrier. Water lays on the surface and air cannot get into the soil. Aerating in 2 forms cuts slits in the surface or removes plugs of soil to de-compact and aerate. Aerobic bacterial activity then increases which promotes root development, aids the uptake of air and nutrient in the grass sward, and allows natural composting of dead matter. Without aerating, grass can drown in surface water or wither in the sun. In our experience almost all horse paddocks need aerating and the rejuvenating effect can be quite amazing. |
